Fire Compartmentation 

Fire compartmentation is a vital part of any passive fire protection design. Compartmentation is a tool that is used in most buildings. 
Compartmentation is achieved by dividing the premises into ‘fire compartments’ through the use of fire doors, floors, and walls of fire-resisting construction, cavity barriers within roof voids, and fire-stopping services that penetrate through these dividing elements. 
 
Providing compartmentation to current Building Regulations and British Standards requirements: 
 
Prevents the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases 
Subdivides buildings into manageable areas of risk 
 
Provides adequate means of escape enabling time for the occupants to safely evacuate the premises. 

Fire Doors 

Fire doors are a crucial element of a building’s passive fire protection safety system, slowing down the spread of fire and smoke. 
 
Fire doors can be used to contain fire, protect the remainder of the building, its occupants, and contents, and provide a protected route of escape. 
 
Fire doors should be installed, maintained, and tested by trained and accredited installers. Each of our Passive Fire Installers is certified to inspect, upgrade, and replace both timber and steel fire door sets.

 Fire Stopping  

A firestop or fire-stopping is a form of passive fire protection, that is used to seal around openings, penetrations, and between joints in a fire resistance, rated wall or floor assembly. These openings vary in size from single cables to cable bundles, cable trays, ducts and pipes. 
 
Fire Stops are designed to maintain the fireproofing of a wall or floor assembly allowing it to impede the spread of fire and smoke. Gaps can also be designed to accommodate structural movement within the building.

Cavity Barriers 

Cavity barriers are required to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through concealed cavities within wall, floor, and ceiling constructions. 
 
This includes small cavities such as where floor surfaces meet the walls of a building, and this can be achieved using materials that will allow an element of movement whilst still providing fire resistance and other benefits such as acoustic and waterproofing. 
 
Large cavities such as open loft spaces can be divided using partition walls with access doors as required, or fire-rated curtaining systems.

In a building fire, structural steel loses strength as the temperature increases. Few things are more fundamental to the fire safety of steel framed buildings than the fire protection of the structural skeleton as failure can lead to premature collapse

Intumescent coatings are paint-like materials that are inert at low temperatures but which provide insulation as a result of a complex chemical reaction at temperatures typically of about 200-250°C. At these temperatures, the properties of steel will not be affected. As a result of this reaction they swell and provide an expanded layer of low-conductivity char. 
Boards are widely used for structural fire protection in the UK. They are used both where the protection system is in full view and where it is hidden.  
 
They offer the specifier a clean, boxed appearance and have the additional advantage that the application is a dry trade and may not have significant impacts on other activities.  
 
Also, boards are factory-manufactured, and thicknesses can be guaranteed. Furthermore, boards can be applied on unpainted steelwork.
